Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a holistic treatment involving thin needles strategically placed along the meridians of your body.

The acupuncture needles balance your life force, which flows along the meridians, improving the stimulation of muscles, nerves, and connective tissues, and relieve the inflammation and swelling that cause pain.

What can acupuncture treat?

The team at Alternative Health & Healing Center use acupuncture to treat the discomfort or pain caused by a variety of health conditions or diseases, including:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Skin problems
  • Digestive disorders
  • Menstrual problems
  • Respiratory disorders

Acupuncture may also relieve pain in the jaw or face caused by temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

What should I expect during an acupuncture session?

Before an acupuncture session, your doctor will perform a physical exam and discuss your current symptoms, along with how they influence your day to day activities. During this initial consultation, your doctor will examine all areas of discomfort to determine an appropriate acupuncture treatment plan for your unique needs.

During your acupuncture treatment, your doctor carefully inserts 5-20 acupuncture needles into various points and meridians on your body. There is no pain associated with the tiny needles. Acupuncture needles are left in position for up to 20 minutes. The doctor will then remove the needles to complete your session. The entire acupuncture session takes about an hour.

Am I a good candidate for acupuncture?

While acupuncture is safe for most people, it is not the right treatment for everyone. The team at Alternative Health & Healing Center does not recommend acupuncture for women who are pregnant, individuals with a pacemaker, or for anyone who has a bleeding disorder. It is also not recommended if you take a prescription blood-thinner as you are more likely to experience side effects during treatment.
