Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in your body, extending from your lower back to your feet and delivering motor function and sensory information to your lower extremities.

Sciatica pain is the result of a pinched or irritated sciatic nerve, often the result of bone spurs,  herniated discs, or the narrowing of the spine called spinal stenosis. Your risk of sciatica increases with age as your spine naturally degenerates over time, making you more vulnerable to bone spurs or herniated discs.

Your risk of developing sciatica also increases if you have diabetes, are obese, or work a job that involves heavy lifting or sitting for long periods.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

Sciatica symptoms typically begin in your lower back and can be felt down to your foot on one side of your body. Common symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Sudden, sharp, or shooting pain
  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Numbness
  • A tingling sensation

Sciatica symptoms vary in type and severity, based on whether your sciatic nerve is pinched or irritated. You may experience increased symptoms during certain activities, such as sitting for an extended time or when sneezing.

How is sciatica pain relieved?

The Alternative Health & Healing Center chiropractors develop individualized treatment plans for you based on the underlying cause and severity of your sciatic pain.

Most people experience relief from sciatic nerve pain through non-surgical methods, including anti-inflammatory medication and chiropractic adjustments. The Alternative Health & Healing Center also offers advanced technology for treating sciatic nerve pain, including:

Some patients receive magnetic resonance therapy to reduce sciatic nerve pain through on-site magnesphere. The magnesphere treatment balances your body’s autonomic nervous system using low-level magnetic fields to reduce symptoms associated with chronic stress, including pain, inflammation, digestive issues, low energy levels, and poor sleep.

Piezo Wave 2

The Piezo Wave 2 uses pulses of sound energy called acoustic compression to treat painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system, including sciatic nerve pain. Acoustic compression therapy successfully treats chronic pain, widely practiced in Europe since the early 1990s, but only recently embraced in the United States.

Surgery is rarely needed for the treatment of sciatica. However, if a spinal condition is causing your sciatic nerve pain, surgery to repair or improve the condition may be beneficial in alleviating your sciatica.
